A 17-year-old Cromwell Community College student took his own life, an inquest has found.

Leonardo DiGiovanni hanged himself at his home at Doddington Road, Wimblington on April 17.

He was discovered at 6pm by his stepfather, who called paramedics and tried to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no alcohol or drugs in Leonardo’s system.

A family statement said: “We would like to express our deep sadness at the tragic loss of someone so special to us all. “We would especially like to thank all the friends, family and professionals including the emergency services, the Coroner’s office support staff and volunteers and Dr. Hambling for unstinting professionalism and compassion in supporting us through this difficult process.

“We are extremely grateful for the many tributes and numerous fundraising efforts by his friends including a bake sale and a music gig.”

Coroner William Morris said: “My conclusion in this tragic case is that Leonardo took his own life.

“This is one of the saddest cases I have had to deal with. It is clear from the evidence that, in spite of what happened, he was surrounded by a loving and supportive family.

“I wish to express my sincere condolences to the family.”

A Just Giving - Remembering Leonardo DiGiovanni fundraising page has been set up. All monies raised will be administrated by Cambridgeshire Community Foundation to help local young people.
