CANON E W Herbert, rector of Tydd St Mary was leaving the village in 1956 after
raising money for a new school in a novel way. He was appointed to the village in 1942 when the school was already condemned. To raise money for a new school he decided to farm the rectory glebe land of about seven acres.
He enlisted the help of church warden and farmer Harry Markillie, and between them they worked the soil.
Good crops of potatoes, cauliflowers and sprouts raised hundreds of pounds towards the new school.
Canon Herbert said: "It has been a great experience and helps one to understand the trials and problems of our farmers and their men in the Fens.
