A NEW floor destined for the 13th century Chatteris Parish Church could hold a history lesson for future generations if plans to bury a time capsule beneath it go ahead. The idea is one of a handful put forward at the launch of a £60,000 campaign to replace the rotten oak and pine floor, which was laid in 1910 in the Grade I-listed building. It only got under way on Sunday but has already received a major boost from regulars at the town's Walk The Dog pub, who have donated £1,000 from an auction. On Friday, licensees Colin and Dee Chalk met the Revs Wendy and James Thomson at St Peter's and St Paul's Church and church member "Zip" Zimmerman, who had suggested the auction. The event brought in about £500 and the remaining £500 was donated from the pub's charity fund.Mrs Thomson said: "We are absolutely thrilled to receive £1,000 from the Walk The Dog at such an early stage of this campaign."The old floor has suffered badly due to wet rot which was seeping in unnoticed and it has now deteriorated very quickly."We had to put down temporary flooring for the Christmas period because it is so soft a women's heeled shoe could have gone straight into it."We have been talking about a variety of fund-raising ideas and we plan to bury a time capsule beneath the new floor giving a snapshot of Chatteris for future generations."The Parochial Church Council is in the process of applying for grants from the Heritage Fund and other bodies.A small fund-raising committee has been formed and events planned include lunches, coffee mornings, concerts and a banquet.
