BUSINESS IN THE COMMUNITY
College of West Anglia
With campuses in King’s Lynn, Wisbech and Cambridge the College of West Anglia is one of the largest providers of education and training in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.
We have an exceptional track record in developing the skills and talents of our students and our courses focus on preparing them for employment and further study.
We offer a range of courses, in a variety of subjects, including A-levels, vocational courses and apprenticeships, which was graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted at our most recent inspection.
Each year we educate more than 10,000 students and 1,000 apprentices alongside providing bespoke training through our Employer Engagement team.
Our King’s Lynn campus is home to University Centre West Anglia (UcWA), which offers a range of higher education courses including degrees, foundation degrees, HNCs and HNDs.
The compact nature of UcWA ensures our students receive unprecedented support from tutors.
In recent years, students studying computer science, psychosocial studies, history and English, and early childhood studies reported 100 per cent satisfaction on the National Student Survey.
Worzals
We opened in 2011 with 30 employees, we expanded in 2015 and now employee just over 100 staff, serving 120,000 hot meals a year.
Our farm shop, butchers and deli supply our restaurant and our plants in our garden centre are grown on our 42 acre site in Upwell.
Metalcraft
Metalcraft have been training apprentices in the heart of the Fens for more than 100 years, currently almost 50 per cent of our current workforce have been developed via the Metalcraft Apprenticeship.
This workforce comes from Chatteris and the surrounding area which Metalcraft recognises and has for a long time made charitable donations within the local area.
The business sees it vital that it supports the community which provides a significant proportion of the employees.
It was also starting to become apparent that large customers, particularly government funded customers, were adding a requirement to demonstrate ‘socioeconomics’ within tenders for work and indicating that scoring for this element would be a larger part in the future.
Up to two years ago the donations from Metalcraft were made in an ad hoc manner with no structure or transparency, typically it was organisations who had links with the business that received the donations.
In the summer of 2016 an idea was conceived to develop what became the ‘Metalcraft Community Fund’.
This project had two key rules, any organisations which applied had to be ‘not-for-profit’ & located in the PE16 postcode You will see from the impact that we have certainly ticked that box!
With such a high proportion of our workforce coming from our local area it is vital we ensure that we support past, present and future employee’s to ensure that the local area can continue to offer a diverse range of activities, clubs and organisations outside of work.
You will see from the impact that we have certainly ticked that box!
