BUILDING of a new 1.1m community gym will start in January after Fenland District Council agreed to help pay for the centre, as part of programme to provide leisure facilities in Chatteris.

The council agreed to pay 600,000 towards the 50-station gym and exercise studio at Cromwell Community College yesterday. Chatteris Town Council had already approved 500,000 for the gym, which is due to open in 2013.

Councillor Alan Melton, Fenland District Council Leader and finance portfolio holder, said: “Everyone knows that we are living in very tough economical times but this underlines our firm commitment to doing everything we can to improve the health and quality of life for people of all ages around Fenland - and leisure plays a big part in that.”

Chatteris Mayor, Councillor Peter Murphy said: “This is great news for the town. We look forward to working with the college and Cambridgeshire County Council to deliver the project.”
