A FENLAND councillor has called for a 30mph speed limit on the A141 outside her home after her son was seriously injured in a collision with a lorry.

Chris French, the son of Councillor Jan French, suffered broken ribs and a fractured pelvis when his car collided with a lorry on Wednesday evening.

The crash took place outside Cllr French’s home in Wisbech Road, Westry, near March.

Chris suffered fractured ribs, a broken pelvis, damaged vertebrae, bleeding on his liver, swollen lungs, a nasty gash to his head and a cut on his arm.

He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by air ambulance. Chris is heavily sedated and could have an operation today.

The collision took place just days after a similar collision close to the entrance of Fenmarc Produce involving three cars, one of which was driven by farmer John Martin who also lives in Wisbech Road.

Cllr French, a former Mayor of March, said: “A police officer told me that not one week goes by without a collision of some kind along this road. I cannot imagine how much it costs to send police, doctors, the fire brigade and sometimes the air ambulance here every week.

“If this is happening on a weekly basis then something must be done. Westy is a village and needs a 30mph speed limit.

“Myself, Mick (her husband) and Kim (her daughter) have had so many near misses on this road because people don’t realise sometimes that we are stopping. I have to indicate very early and pump my brakes so my brake lights flash to make sure I am safe.”

Cllr French also praised the passing motorist who stopped at the scene to pull Chris out of his Peugeot 106 following the collision.

She said: “Kim climbed in through the sunroof and I opened the door to help Chris but we then discovered fuel was leaking so needed to get him out as soon as possible.

“Kim and I insisted that the man pulled Chris out despite his injuries and we want to thank him for his help.”

The driver of the lorry, from Derbyshire, was uninjured in the collision.

The A141 was closed for more than four hours while emergency services treated the man and cleared the wreckage.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Pc Steve Edwards said: “We believe there were several other cars in the area at the time and we are asking for the drivers to get in touch.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicles involved in the moments leading up to it.

“Any information no matter how small could help to discover how this collision occurred.”
