Council tax payers in Fenland are facing a 1.98 per cent rise in their district council part of the bill this year - but it works out at less than a fiver for most households

The decision to raise the Council Tax in Fenland was unanimously approved at Thursday’s full council meeting.

A report to the meeting explained the rise is the equivalent to £4.95 on a Band D property, but as the majority of properties in the district are in Bands A to C the annual rise will be less for most householders.

The increase equates to just 6p a week for a householder in a Band A property or 19p a week in the most expensive Band H home.

There was no debate on the council’s proposed budget for the upcoming year or on its business plan.

But Councillor Chris Boden said: “It is the mark of the hardwork done by cabinet members and officers that we find ourselves ahead of the game and planning for the future.”

He said other local authorities were not finding it so easy to set their budgets and pointed out it had taken seven and a quarter hours of discussions for Cambridgeshire County Council to agree theirs.

The county council have agreed a two per cent increase in Council Tax to be spent on adult social care in the coming year.
