Mike Petty, a research historian with expert knowledge of River Great Ouse and drainage of the Fens, shared some of his research with The March Society in an enjoyable talk.
Mike revealed the present arrangement of drains and rivers with the outfall at King’s Lynn (Vermuyden’s plan) was initially rejected in favour of a plan by a Mr Partridge, who had an outfall at Wisbech.
But Mr Partridge did not attend a meeting to announce approval of his plan, Vermuden’s was approved instead.
Mike explained about Vermuyden’s drainage and subsequent toll bridge building. The building of the A142 in the 70s replaced many of the older roads and bridges.
March Society’s 10th AGM is on July 12 at 7pm in March Library. The Society needs a new treasurer if it is to continue, as well committee members. The AGM will be followed by a talk by Edna Stacey. All welcome.
