The 27-year-old, who was born in King’s Lynn but lives in Long Sutton, finished in first place in the discipline’s second qualifying heat this morning.

He then finished second in the semi-finals to set up a clash with Australia’s Adam Vella in the gold medal match.

With both men faced with 15 targets, Vella was successful with 11 shots but Heading hit two less, to walk away with the silver medal.

The narrow defeat meant Heading lost his Commonwealth title, after winning gold in the trap at Delhi 2010. He also won bronze in the pairs alongside David Kirk four years ago but decided to stick to the singles this time.

Heading said: “Adam is real quality and not missing in the semi-final was a very high standard. I gave it my best and I can hold my head up high.”
