THE young cricketers from Kinderley Primary School came out on top in a highly entertaining competition at Wisbech Town cricket club last week.

In a high-scoring final, the Tydd St Giles school beat Friday Bridge by 17 runs, scoring 253 runs to their opponents’ 236.

The Wis Gets Physical Kwik Cricket Festival featured 100 players from Years 5 and 6 in 10 primary schools. They contested a rapid succession of matches played on four separate pitches.

The festival was organised by Fenland District Council’s sports development team. Fifteen volunteers assisted on the day, umpiring and keeping the scores. They included four from Farrow House, a school in Wisbech which works with young people aged 10-18, providing specialist support for individuals with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The other helpers were coaches and players from Wisbech Town cricket club.

Councillor Steve Garratt, FDC’s portfolio holder responsible for health and young people, said: “It’s great to see so many schools coming together, competing hard and having a lot of fun in the process.”
