WANTED: anyone who loves nature and wants to help create an oasis of peace for everyone in March to enjoy.

A year ago the Norwood Road Nature Reserve, at the back of the railway line, was a tangled, neglected wilderness. Now it is gradually being transformed. But more helpers are needed.

A meeting is being held on Monday February 27 in a bid to bring together a group of volunteers to continue the work that has already been carried out.

Over the past 11 months a huge amount has been done in the reserve by Fenland District Council, Street Pride volunteers and NACRO (a young adult education centre in Wisbech). The March Wildlife Group and the Wildlife Trust have also been involved.

Some of the previously tangled undergrowth around walkways has been cleared and boardwalks fitted around the reserve, making it easily accessible. Some pond dipping areas have also been created.

Councillor Peter Murphy, FDC’s portfolio holder responsible for the environment, said: “A tremendous amount has been achieved over the past year. But there is a lot more to be done and any extra help would be greatly appreciated.”

The main focus over the next few months will be finishing the pond dipping areas to give children from schools a place to go for outdoor learning classes. Efforts will also be made to encourage the return of wild flowers to the meadow.

In addition, FDC is working with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Environmental Records Centre (CPERC) to begin collecting data on all the species and habitats within the reserve.

• Everyone is welcome to the meeting on February 27 at Fenland Hall, County Road, March, at 6.30pm. Come to the Civic Entrance. For more details of the work at Norwood Road, call Jeanette Milner, FDC’s Street Pride coordinator, on 01354 654321 or e-mail jmilner@fenland.gov.uk
