FLOWER lovers in Fenland are being offered a once-in-a-decade opportunity to visit one of the world’s most spectacular horticultural shows this summer.

The Fenland Twinning Association (FTA) is organising a return visit to the German district of Nettetal at the end of August. It will include a day out at the huge Floriade show, which is being staged in the city of Venlo in the Netherlands, just across the border from Nettetal.

A party from Nettetal visited Fenland for five days last year.

Fenland district councillor Mike Cornwell, the association’s secretary, said: “Our return visit there would normally have taken place next year but Nettetal’s Burgermeister has made a special request that it be brought forward a year to give us the chance to enjoy the Floriade.

“It’s a show that is only held once every 10 years and this time I’m told it has more than 100 gardens and pavilions showcasing the world’s best flowers, plants, trees, fruits and vegetables.

“So it will be a wonderful day out and a special bonus on top of all the great hospitality that the people of Nettetal always show us.”

The association has hired a coach that will be departing from Fenland on Thursday August 30, and returning on Monday September 3. Seats can be booked now - they cost 80 per adult and 50 per student.

Cllr Cornwell said: “I’d urge people to book their seats fast. It promises to be a terrific five days and this is really great value.”
