A LONG and hard-fought campaign by residents has succeeded in getting the speed limits lowered in Guyhirn.

The limit along High Road has been cut from 40mph to 30mph and a new 40mph limit has been imposed along Gull Road. The new speed limits took effect on October 22.

Guyhirn is believed to the first area in Fenland to benefit from Cambridgeshire County council’s new policy that allows residents to set speed limits if they can raise the necessary resources.

The scheme in Guyhirn has mainly been funded by Wisbech St Mary Parish Council.

Councillor Gavin Booth, chairman of the Fenland Rural Road Safety Action Network, said: “Speeding has been a major concern in Guyhirn for ages. We’re delighted that finally local people have succeeded in getting proper speed limits imposed there and already they say they are seeing a dramatic effect. It’s a great example of localism in action.

“We hope this success will encourage communities elsewhere in Fenland where there are similar problems.”
