SPECIAL events to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee continued last week with the planting of two commemorative trees in Wisbech.
The first, a tulip tree, was donated by the Wisbech Centre Women’s Institute and planted in Wisbech Park last Wednesday by Deborah Somerville and other members of the group.
Later the same afternoon a similar ceremony was held in St Peter’s Church gardens for the planting of a locust tree, a gift from parishioners and the Friends group.
Councillor Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for parks and open spaces, was present at both events. He said: “We’d like to thank the WI and the Friends for these generous donations, which will form long-lasting tributes to the Queen on this memorable occasion.”
• A red oak tree was planted in March’s West End Park last week by members of the park’s Friends group in memory of fellow member Chris Christian, who died recently. The tree replaces one that was damaged in storms last year.
Cllr Murphy joined the group for the planting ceremony.
