Fire crews tackling the aftermath of floods which have devastated homes in March won praise tonight from many of the residents they have helped.

The outpouring of support followed a brief mention by fire fighter Tony Raine that the March crew, once finished in Gold Street and Century Way, would be moving to other neighbourhoods to help.

“Please bear with us,” he posted to a March Facebook page.

Within minutes the site was inundated with people praising their efforts and calling for a public appeal to support them.

Emma Wright told them: “I think you’re doing an amazing job under the circumstances.”

Jane Whytock said she was “so proud of our firefighters so when they next strike over their pensions, etc, please remember how they are helping everyone.”

Sue Bridger said the fire crews were doing “a fab job – smiley faces on crew down Gold Street”.

Tony Liversidge told Mr Raine: “You boys are bloody fantastic. Please thank every one of them.”

Sandra Hayes described them as “an inspiration” whilst Councillor Jan French told readers she would donate the first £10 to a fund. Wendy Cox said the fire crews were doing “a grand job” whilst Mary Daplyn said “well done to the fire service lads. I would say they will sleep well tonight but then again I bet they will still be on duty.”

Fire fighter Wayne Marshall said: “Thank you all for you kind words of thanks and support for us at March fire station; its truly appreciated.

“Our thoughts are with the residents affected by this terrible weather front and wish them a speedy recovery.”

Hill added: “These guys have done more for us in the space of 24 hours than anyone else.”
