FIREFIGHTERS repaid a hospice that had cared for their family and friends by handing over thousands of pounds they had raised through fundraising.

March Fire Station retained crew commander Wayne Marshall said: “We have seen the work of the hospice and know what a great job they do.”

So he and his colleagues held a series of social events, car washes, car boot sales and fireworks display throughout the year to hand over to Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough.

Mr Marshall went with fire fighters Tony Raine and Tony Bird, as well as crew commander Ady Bradshaw in one of their fire engines to drop off the 2,061 cheque.

Sue Ryder Care fundraiser Mel Humphrey said: “We are so grateful to the firefighters who have also helped us in the past.

“They fight fires on top of their full-time jobs and still manage to find time to support us which is fantastic and makes such a difference to our patients and their families.”
