THE collapse of crisp manufacturer Golden Wonder after racking up losses of £11million last year, may have an impact in the Fens.MBM, which supplies bagged potatoes to retailers and wholesalers, has bases in March and Chatteris, is known to have supplied Golden Wonder. But MBM, which itself ran into difficulties two years ago, looks to be in much better shape than ever to tackle any difficulties, even though the company admits trading conditions continue to be difficult. It is fighting rivals for business in the face of moves by customers to reduce their number of suppliers.Last year, MBM closed factories at Shrewsbury and Coventry with the loss of at least 70 jobs."We do not anticipate seeing any improvement until 2006," it said. The company said it expected the business to improve in the second half, when it plans to launch a number of new products. It intends to introduce a range of fruit bars under the Hartley's brand and snack pot versions of Ambrosia custard and rice pudding with jam.The firm said it was also excited by prospects for meat alternative quorn, which it bought from rival Kraft in June. It said it had begun developing plans for Quorn, which include supplying it to pubs and restaurants.
