Five candidates have stepped forward to contest a vacancy for the Roman Bank, Wisbech, ward on Fenland District Council

The by election, on May 8, has been called following the resignation of Tory councillor Phil Hatton, a former chairman of the planning committee.

The Tory hopeful this time is Newton parish councillor Sam Clark whilst Labour has put up Barry Diggle to contest the seat.

UKIP will be represented by Alan Lay, who won a county council seat last May, whilst Lib Dems have a March town councillor Stephen Court as their candidate.

The line up is completed by independent Erbie Murat, a former town clerk of Wisbech.

Candidates have until Friday to withdraw if they wish to do so: the notice of poll will be officially released by Fenland Council on Monday.

Conservatives took all three Roman Bank seats at the 2011 elections: the successful candidate this time round will join others in facing re-election in a year’s time.

The Roman Bank ward comprises the villages of Gorefield, Leverington, Newton and Tydd St Giles.
