SPECIALITY food retailer Julian Graves celebrated opening its new store on Broad Street, March - but the company's celebrations did not deter the weekend vandals.

The shop, which cost £40,000 to refit, was one of five town centre units attacked as vandals went on the rampage.

The first incident happened last Thursday evening, when youths smashed a door window in the Cancer Research shop in Fenland Walk in an attempt to steal money from the till.

After finding no money, clothes rails were knocked to the floor and the shop was forced to remain closed on Friday to clear up the damage.

Julian Graves was one of the other shops, which included Boots, Birthdays and Superdrug, all in Broad Street, which had windows either smashed or damaged on Saturday night.

Both Julian Graves and Boots had their windows repaired on Monday.

Steven Hammer, area manager for Julian Graves, is confident March will become a good base for his company, which has 300 stores nationwide selling healthier food stuffs.

"We are confident the new shop will be popular," he said.

Police and council officials, meanwhile, are studying CCTV images of the town centre in a bid to identify those responsible for the weekend mayhem.
