Five year old finds her writing wings with a book about fairies

Lydia Port-Burke was helping her parents plant seeds when she decided to make a fairy garden in the hope that real fairies would come to their back yard.

The idea grew and after making fairy houses by painting her Dad’s old shoes she created a village called Fairy Lane.

The village in their garden at Little Downham, was brought to life with treasures like broken flower pots, pebbles and shells along with mini people made from modelling clay.

Her mum Eleanor Port said: “There was a lot of role play with the fairy characters and chattering about what they got up to.

“One weekend Lydia fell from a climbing frame and hurt her knee. She had to rest which was when I overheard her creating a story to occupy her time.

“The words were all hers and were put down on paper. It just went from there. It wasn’t a planned thing, it just happened.”

The book is called Fairy Mission to find Stripe and is now online on iTunes to help raise money for Children In Need.

The storyline of evolved from role-play with the Fimo characters, said Ms Port.

“We acted the storyline out, before deciding to capture it in a story and write it down. All the words in the story are Lydia’s, and have not been changed.”

Once the words were finalised Lydia, a pupil at Feoffees Primary School, worked on the illustrations with her parents, sketching in pencil, then black ink, water colours and Sharpie markers.

Lydia describes the book as being about a fast-flying fairy land bug who has been sneaked out of Fairy Land by goblins.

It is up to the fairy family to find Stripe and reunite her with the Fairy King but to accomplish this mission, the fairies must venture into the human world while all the time Stripe’s magic powers fade fast.

The book costs 99p. A donation of 20p from each book purchase will be made to Children in Need.
