The city was hit, like many parts of the county, by severe flash floods which wreaked havoc for motorists.

A reader who took these photos said: “The shot of the underpass shows it as it was earlier.

“It doesn’t show well but water is coming out of the gulley in the foreground and running down to collect at the bottom and drain away from there.

“Clearly the drainage in the area has been overwhelmed as the two other photos, of the station approach, show.”

Our reader said the police closed both the underpass and the station forecourt “but people are ignoring the latter”.

One person wrote on an Ely Facebook site that “entrance to the station is now a river; station may need to forget the new bike racks and invest in some canoe racks instead!”

And wrote that “it was flooded, so was Tesco and the petrol station and the petrol station was shut for a bit”

RAC reported the A142 railway underpass in Ely was closed in both directions at the Station Road junction, because of flooding.

Their spokesman said: “Diversion in operation - traffic can divert via the adjacent level crossing above.”
