A two time British badminton Olympian visited a Fenland school to give students tips towards sporting success.

Former British number one Anthony Clark, who participated in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics before retiring in 2011, visited Thomas Clarkson Academy in Wisbech on behalf of the Sky Sport for Living programme.

Clark gave a motivational speech to GCSE and BTEC students before working with the girls’ rugby team.

He said: “The first thing students have to do is to find their particular sport. You typically find that boys will want to be a professional football – the next Wayne Rooney, but that may not be the sport that is right for them.

“So young people should sample a variety of sports until they find the one they have passion for and ability.

“I would say that talent makes up 10 per cent of the reason why someone is successful in their sporting field and the rest comes down to discipline, training and dedication.

“The Sky Sports for Living is so successful because young people are able to meet and be mentored by successful sports people like me, who show them that we are just ordinary. I am a normal bloke with children, but I have put in a huge dedication to my sport.”

Teacher Kirstie Smith said: “Having Anthony come in to meet and work with students has made them realise that sporting success is achievable. He has taught them that the key to success is about applying yourself.”

Student Cree Howlett , who is part of the school’s rugby team, said: “It has been really enjoyable working with Anthony and he team building exercises will be really useful.”

The sportsman will return to the academy later in the year for a follow up session.
