ACCIDENT experts at Cambridgeshire County Council have stressed drivers must slow down on the Forty Foot Bank.

A spokesman said: "It is clear from accidents in the past that driver error, often involving excess speed or overtaking, has played a major role on what is mostly a long straight road with a slight bend.

"Motorists must play their part and drive sensibly and at a safe speed according to the conditions."

"We have always and will continue to look at ways of reducing accidents along the Forty Foot."

There have been 29 accidents along the Forty Foot Bank, with 10 cars entering the water, since January 2000, from Leonard Childs' Bridge up to the Ramsey Forty Foot turn-off.

Of these accidents, six involved slight injury, one serious injury and three were fatal, involving six deaths.

Inquests have not yet been held into the deaths of Dean Hawes, 27, and his seven-year-old son, Jordan, who died when their car crashed into the drain on December 20.

Hearings are also due into the deaths of Jose Marmeleria, 49, Carlos Condeco, 46, and Cidalina de Oliveira, 56, whose Hyundai car ended up in the drain on February 1.
