The service paid tribute to four men, with links to Chatteris, listed on the memorial as killed on this date 100 years ago.

Tina Prior, publicity officer, said: “Their lives and sacrifice were remembered during an ‘Every Man Remembered’ ceremony.

“Branch standard bearers, Robin Lake and Janice Baynes were on duty and several members of the branch and public attended, with members of the youth section.

“Major Norman Larke officiated, reciting the exhortation and leading the two minutes silence.

“Short biographies of the four men were read - Albert Franklin, Thomas Charlie Poole, Charles Robert Smith and Percy Thornelow Tate.

“Rev Lionel Murray from the Emmanuel Church led the prayers.”

Youth section members prepared a display which detailed the battle which included the poem, Memorial Tablet by Siegfried Sassoon as well as a video presentation.

The Battle of Passchendaele was one of the bloodiest battles of World War One.

In the three months of fighting, half a million Allied and German soldiers were killed, wounded or went missing.

The conflict - officially known as the Third Battle of Ypres - was fought from 31 July 1917 until November that year.

It was infamous for the casualties and the mud. Many drowned in the thick quagmire, caused by weeks of relentless rain.
