AN urgent appeal has been issued by the county's fire and rescue service to help track arsonists who set fire to four haystacks in the Fens on Monday night.

They were the latest in a series which have plagued the area for weeks and the fire and rescue service is urging the public to stay vigilant after four stack fires in the Fens last night.

Crews from March and Wisbech tackled the latest stack fires which ranged in size from 10 to 200 tonnes. It is believed that these fires were started deliberately and the police have been informed.

The first fire was reported in Guyhirn at 10.40pm, where one jet and rakes were used and the fire was under control at 6.15am. The second fire was reported in Murrow at 10.50pm and is currently being damped down.

The third fire was reported in Bunkers Hill, Wisbech St Mary's at 11.05pm. One hose reel was used and it was under control by 12.30am. The fourth fire was reported again in Murrow at midnight and was under control by 5.20am.

Watch Manager Phillip Pilbeam said: "After this spate of incidents we are urging the public to stay vigilant and to report suspicious activity in and around field areas.

"Stack fires can be extremely dangerous and can easily spread causing a lot of damage and risking life and property. We advise anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously to call police straight away."

If anyone has any information about who was responsible for the fires last night, they can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You do not have to give your name and you may be entitled to a cash reward.
