Girls from the 4th March Brownies group learned lessons on where our food comes from during a visit to the town’s Tesco store.

Twenty four girls attended the Tesco Farm to Fork session during their meeting last Thursday.

On arrival the girls were given tabards and hats to wear and had worksheets to complete. The Brownies looked at four produce themes: cheese, fish, green grocery and baked goods.

They went to the cheese counter where they had a tasting session and learnt about where the cheese came from. They visited the fish counter where they found out about the different types of fish and sampled the prawns.

They then visited the green grocery department to taste different fruit. At the bakery they were shown how to knead dough for the different types of bread and then they went upstairs to try their hand at cake icing.

Lily, aged 8, said: “It was nice to taste the cheese even though one was very smelly.”

Maddison, also aged 8, said: “The fish had eyes and teeth!”

Kelly Riddell from the March Tesco store led the session and at the end presented each Brownie with a certificate and goodie bag which included stickers and recipes.

Brownie Leader Susan Southwell explained: “The girls have chosen to visit Tesco for part of the Brownie Adventure Challenge. They were challenged to meet somewhere outside of their usual meeting place.”
