CAMBRIDGESHIRE Police issued fines to cyclists who put pedestrians in danger by riding on March’s pavements yesterday.
Patrols were held to educate cyclists to use the town’s designated cycle paths after pedestrians complained about bikes riding on the footpath.
Two £30 fines were handed out to cyclists riding on the footpath in Broad Street in full view of police officers, oblivious to the fact they were breaking the law.
Warnings were issued to cyclists who remained on their bikes at Wigstones Bridge and along Elwyn Road, where roadworks were blocking a stretch of the cycle lane, instead of getting off and walking with them by their side.
PSCO Sally Mitchell said: “It was quite successful. A lot of members of the public we spoke to were aware of it and most of the people who were not cyclists were grateful to see us out and making a point of enforcing it.
“Talking to members of the public when we are out on patrol they mention how they nearly got hit by a bike on Broad Street and this issue is often brought up when we hold parish council or neighbourhood watch meetings.”
PSCO Mitchell pleaded with cyclists to be considerate to pedestrians who may not be able to hear a bike approach.
She said: “The elderly, less able bodied and young children are especially vulnerable, so please do not use footpaths to cycle on and think of others.”
