A DODDINGTON couple will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary together this Thursday.
Ivan and Jean Wright, of Manor Estate, Doddington, married when Jean was 23 and Ivan was 21.
Fondly calling Ivan, 81, her “toy boy” Jean, 83, recalls how they met.
She said: “My sister used to own a pub called the Railway Inn and Ivan was a mechanic at the Cisco garage in Wimblington.
“I was always being sent over to the garage to get things and Ivan would always throw his arms around me and give me a kiss.”
The couple married at St Peters church in Wimblington and have three children, twin boys and a daughter.
Jean feels the key to their 60 year marriage has been that, during the difficult times, they have “stuck it out” and “worked through it”.
She said: “It was never smooth or plain sailing, especially when our rent was 12 shillings a week, equivalent to 65p in today’s currency, and we were only earning £1 a week at the time.”
Ivan and Jean are unsure how they are going to celebrate their anniversary as their calendar has been marked “out for the day”.
But the couple does not want presents or to go out,
They said: “All we want is our family and our grandchildren around us. We just want the company.”
