A group of Christians and a four legged friend are passing through Fenland today on a 120 mile pilgrimage to Walsingham in Norfolk.
After a morning prayer, the Student Cross group set off from St Peter’s Church in Wimblington.
They will walk 19.7 miles to Wisbech, where they will rest for the night.
The 26 worshippers, predominantly students, are carrying a giant cross with them and, for one day only, have been joined by a donkey.
The six day pilgrimage started just outside Kettering and will end in Walsingham on Good Friday.
Organiser Laura Mitcham said: “This pilgrimage has been going since just after the Second World War and today there are a lot of different groups taking part all over the country. We will all meet in Walsingham, where everyone will celebrate Easter together.
“This year our group has two chaplains, 10 new walkers and today we have been joined by a local lady and her donkey.”
One new walker, Suffolk University student Marta Conti, said she decided to take part because of friends’ recommendations.
She said: “I always thought it was not for me but some friends did it last year and they were very enthusiastic about it. It has been a unique experience.”
