THE Queen is not the only one celebrating a 60th anniversary this year.

G’s farm, near Ely, is always raising a glass to 60 years in the business.

And to celebrate it is making an extra special effort for its annual Open Farm Sunday.

It was 1952 when Guy Shropshire, father of now chief executive John, started growing Fenland celery at Hainey Farm in Barway, or G’s.

Back then, the celery was taken by train to Covent Garden Market in London - 60 years later and not much has not changed, though it is normally lorries shifting the celery now.

John said the open farm day is a great opportunity to show a modern farm runs.

“The conservation of the environment is a much larger part of what we do these days, and that’s where LEAF come in, Linking Environment and Farming. It’s all about farming alongside the flora and fauna,” he said.

Visitors to the farm will be able to see first hand how salads are grown, take a look at modern-day farming machinery and discover how a radish gets from field to fork.

As well as celebrating 60 years of the Queen... sorry, farm, there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, mini tractor races and a Diamond Jubilee Farmer’s Market.

The Open Farm Sunday is on Sunday, June 17, 10am-3pm. Entry is free. For more information contact Davina Harvey on 07445832354
