A Fenland school has received a glowing report following an Ofsted inspection last month.
The quality of teaching, the behaviour of pupils and the leadership of the head teacher and governors at Townley Primary School, of Christchurch, were all praised by lead inspector Andrew Read, who visited on January 22-23.
Mr Read said: “The teaching of mathematics is well-planned, the teaching of science is a strength and the teaching of reading has benefited from a recent review designed to accelerate progress and an enjoyment of books.
“The behaviour of pupils is good. They enjoy coming to school because pupils have a good relationship with each other and their teachers.
“Pupils who find it difficult to behave well make rapid improvement in the school. This is a particular strength of the school, and shows how well pupils with special educational needs are provided for.
“Because pupils learn in groups from a young age, attitudes to learning are good, particularly in younger age groups. The school’s work to keep pupils safe and secure is good.
“Documents that record the school’s own strengths and weaknesses are comprehensive and accurate. Subject leadership is strong and carried out by all staff.”
Mr Read reserved special praise for head teacher Robert Glozier and chair of governors John Garlick.
He said: “Mr Glozier maintains a strong focus on making sure that the needs of all pupils are met, so that achievement has increased and teaching is improving.
“The chair Mr Garlick is experienced and as a consequence has developed an excellent understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the school. This means that senior leaders receive a good level of challenge and support from governors.”
For the school to reach “outstanding” status, improvements are needed in the pupils’ presentation in books, grammar, spelling and knowledge of other countries.
Headteacher Robert Glozier welcomed the findings of the report and vowed to keep pushing for improvements.
He said: “We are delighted with the outcome of the recent inspection, especially as the new framework is more demanding than the previous one.
“The staff, children, governors and parents will all continue to work hard to make Townley a successful school.”
