REAL ale lovers drank their way through 5,500 pints of beer and 660 pints of cider at this year’s Elysian Winter Beer Festival, helping to raise about £500 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The two day festival at Ely Maltings was the fourth to be staged by the city’s branch of CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale - and attracted about 1600 visitors across the two sessions.

Ely CAMRA chairman Phil Wignall said: “The festival was a great success, with a record number of visitors. A total of 87 different cask beers were available, many of them from local breweries.

“For the last two years we have run out of beer, so this time we made sure we had plenty, with 40 different beers still available when we closed. The first beer to run out was Heavenly Matter from the Cambridge Moonshine brewery.

“Dan Chinery was the festival organiser, and he did a great job with the help of other CAMRA members. There are already plans afoot for the fifth winter beer festival, to be held in 2014.”
