Rob Bresler was crowned the world champion of pea shooting for a third successive time after beating Victor Kronig in a tense final in Witcham at the weekend.
The village’s annual pea shooting world championships date back to 1971 and Saturday’s victory for Bresler saw him add his name to the leading lights from the competition’s past.
It is the first time someone has claimed three titles on the trot since David Hollis, who reigned supreme from 1999-2001.
A field of 61 participants signed up to take part in the 44th championships, held once again this year as part of a village fete – raising funds for the village hall.
Mr Bresler’s name will be added once more to the John Tyson Shield.
In total, the event helped raise more than £2,000.
Elsewhere on the day, Michelle Berry beat Rachel Cross to win the women’s championships while Martha Collins claimed the children’s event.
Witcham has been the spiritual home of the championships since 1971 when village schoolmaster John Tyson was inspired to set them up to try and raise funds for the village hall.
Mr Tyson got the idea for the championships from a group of his mischievous pupils, who he caught firing peas at their fellow students during school-time.
The championships have been running ever since and have drawn interest from across the globe, with competitors having arrived from Spain, the USA and New Zealand to take part.
