MORE than 300 people defied the miserable weather to attend a Whittlesey couple’s Christmas lights switch-on on Saturday.
John and Gina Ferridge’s annual event was almost cancelled because of the torrential rain but in the end raised more than �800 for Children with Cancer.
Mrs Ferridge’s mother Phyllis Oakley switched on the lights on her 93rd birthday.
Mr Ferridge said: “She told us it was the best birthday she has ever had.
“She’s never had so many people singing happy birthday before.”
Alderman Jacobs Primary School choir performed alongside the Key Theatre pantomime and Father Christmas and Rudolph added to the festive feel.
Mr Ferridge was ecstatic with how the event unfolded.
He said: “It was absolutely brilliant. We were worried at one stage we would have to cancel because the weather was so awful but we have never had so many people turn up,
“Thankfully the weather improved when the amazing choir performed so beautifully.”
The couple, who lost their son aged eight to Leukaemia, have hosted a Christmas lights switch-on since 2003 and have raised �17,000 for cancer charities.
