The year six pupils were taking part in a Sports Transition Day, which was run by the academy’s sports department with the help of year 10 and year seven students.

The event had a Commonwealth Games theme, with pupils from the different schools mixed up and put on teams named after countries participating in this summer’s games in Glasgow.

Guest of honour was undefeated Chatteris boxer Jordan Gill, who gave a talk to the pupils, signed autographs, presented medals and even joined in with some of the sports.

He said: “I got here at 9am, gave a talk and had the chance to join in with the sports as well.

“It’s been good to get involved. I can remember being their age and when a sportsman came into a school you wanted to be like them. It was inspirational.

“If I’ve encouraged a couple more people to take up boxing or sport in general then that’s good, and today’s also been a chance for people from different schools to meet each other and make friends.”

Schools taking part were All Saints, Burrowmoor, Cavalry, Guyhirn, Townley, Westwood, Alderman Payne, Benwick, Elm, Friday Bridge, Thomas Eaton, West Walton, Peckover, Leverington and St Peter’s Junior.

Pupils had a go at football, badminton, cricket, netball, athletics, table tennis, rounders, rugby, dance, tennis and basketball.

Medals were handed out at the closing ceremony to a group of youngsters who demonstrated respect, excellence and friendship during the day.

They were presented to Kirk Paul (All Saints); Jodie Foster (Friday Bridge); Euan Riddle (West Walton); Josh Holmes (Peckover); Rebecca May (Cavalry); Asha Hayes, Angelo Ahito, Leila Allie, Liam Lambert (all Burrowmoor); Georgia Simpson, Sky (Cavalry); Ted Payne (Thomas Eaton); Zoe Napier (Guyhirn); Devon Lucas (Leverington); Sophie Reeve (All Saints).

The trophy for the best overall sportsmen was given to Elm pupil Josh Williams, who was described as “exceptional” and praised for the respect he showed others.

The day was sponsored by Fenland District Council, The Cambs Times, Sainsbury’s and Chatteris ABC.
