It tells the story of Edmund Cooper and his beloved Emily and how the war affected their lives and relationship.

The first performance of the play was held today at the King Edward Centre, Chatteris, and will continue to run for the next few days at the school.

Louise Lomax, deputy head teacher at Kingsfield Primary School, said: “The play is the finale of the heritage project that we have been running, funded by the National Heritage Lottery.

“Some representatives from the National Lottery are here to see the play performed along with some parents.”

Katrina and Willow also received a certificate for their play from the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History.

Mike Petty, association president, said: “We do an annual award scheme in which we hand out awards to local people or organisations that have really looked into the local history.

“We are presenting the award today as part of our schools programme because we think that the pupils here have really taken an interest and researched their local history.”

The performance included traditional songs from the First World War - Pack up Your Troubles, It’s A Long Way To Tipperary and Keep The Home Fires Burning.

Among the audience at Friday’s performance was NE Cambs MP Steve Barclay.

The pupils also created propaganda artwork as well as displays about local soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War.
