Volunteers were busy hanging baskets and planting plants at a nursery today as March stepped up its Anglia in Bloom preparations.

March in Bloom volunteers spent several hours doing their thing at Delflands Nurseries in Doddington, who are the main sponsors of the town’s campaign.

Last year, there was a silver gilt for March, silver gilt for West End Park and silver for Eastwood Cemetery. This year, they are hoping for even better.

Chairman Frances Murray said: “You always hope you are going to do better. Anglia in Bloom, despite the name, is about more than flowers. It is about community projects and involvement.

“This year, we are hoping to do a sensory garden and dig for victory garden to commemorate 70 years since the end of the Second World War.

“The railings next to the bus shelter on Broad Street have already been painted by people on the community payback scheme, and the shelter will be getting a clean up. There will even be a display of Broad Street from the 1900s to the present day.” Mrs Murray is urging more people to get involved with volunteering to help make the town look its best for when the judges arrive.

She said: “We are looking for more volunteers. We don’t have enough. There is also a Street Pride group which does litter picking on the last Tuesday of every month.”
