More than 100 people played darts while many more crammed into the GER Sports Club to show their support for the fifth annual Mark Cross Charity Darts Day.

The tournament and auction, which was organised by police officer Mark Cross, raised £6,500.

The event has now raised almost £30,000 for the oncology department at Peterborough City Hospital, where Mr Cross received treatment for breast cancer.

The day was opened by oncologist Dr Karen McAdam from Peterborough City Hospital, who explained how their donations were furthering clinical trials at the hospital and had purchased an ultrasound machine used for treating patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Amazing sporting memorabilia was auctioned off - a framed Glenn Hoddle shirt went for £360, while other collectibles, including a boxing glove signed by Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard, fetched hundreds of pounds.

Paul Mearman, Dave King and Neil Addison won the Cricket Triples, Tim Fulcher and Dave King won the Pairs, Liam Moore retained his Youth Singles title and Glenn Moore made it a father and son double by clinching the Singles.

Mr Fulcher ran a highest score in nine darts and a most bullseyes in nine darts competition. This made more than £150 on the day.

The winner of the nine dart challenge was Dave King. The winner of the most bullseyes competition was Jamie Phillips. Both won £25 each and immediately donated their winnings to the charity.

Pete Church donated a four and a half litre bottle of Famous Grouse whiskey and there was a competition to see who could roll a pound coin nearest to the bottle. Nigel Goude won the whiskey, with the competition making more than £160.

Mr Cross said: “I cannot thank all those enough who supported the event and the many people who donated wonderful items on the day.

“Special mention must go to my Mum and Dad, Ann and Dick Cross and my wonderful wife Kim who worked tirelessly securing draw prizes, and my nan, Jackie Healey, who donated nearly the entirety of the tombola prizes and made £330 on the day.

“Also, thanks to Nan’s friend Shirley who worked tirelessly on the tombola stall, Gill Day who donated an abundance of prizes, Bill and Margaret Turvey who with my Mum and Dad ran a fantastic draw on the day and Craig Gilpatrick, Tony Barnes and Lorraine Barnes and all of the GER Committee and bar staff for their continued support.

“Juliet Findley on behalf of Smurfitt Kappa donated a luxury hamper which was the first prize in the draw.

“Many many thanks to all of my board sponsors: JMC Construction; Bob Harrington; The Sportsman (Chatteris); GER Hot Shotz darts team; Parkfield darts team; SDM Fabrication Limited, Jonny Pearce and Darren Wojtowych Garden Services.”
