MANY are born great, some have greatness thrust upon them but, depending on where you live, others simply experience hair raising or hair removing moments. It’s summed up in one word… life.
It begins to explain why, at the Village Inn, Witchford on Friday, 15 brave men and three arguably braver beauty therapists took part in what organisers described as a “gruelling evening of male waxing.”
The gentlemen were Roger Broker, Stephen Broker, Jimmy Carter, Charlie Coupland, Rob Finch, Keith Gallois, Nick Holdsworth, Mathew McClagish, Ed Richardson, Martin Skilbeck, Tim Titmarsh, Mike Vincent, Andy Watkins, Craig West, James Williamson.
In batches of three at a time they took to the waxing couch and endured the type of terror that apparently many ladies actually pay for every few weeks.
Beauty therapists Kate Lacey, Briony Pilling and Natalie Rayner slowly, surely and painfully completed their ‘tasks’ willingly and cheerfully. It’s what they do!
Egged on by compere Ray Haddow, a packed pub roared their approval at each ouch and every scream.
Co organiser Keith Gallois said: “It was a fantastic evening, raising money for a very great cause.
“Which brings us on to the most important bit. The supporters of these ladies and gentlemen very kindly put their hands in their pockets and sponsored the event to a massive total of £3,612.
“All of this money will be used by the Arthur Rank charity to continue to do excellent work at their wonderful Cambridge based hospice.”
They had started with the hope of raising less than half that sum.
The evening was the brainchild of Mr Gallois and his friend Tim Titmarsh who have for the past year been championing the cause ‘Ely to Everest’. Later this year they plan a three week trip that will include climbing more than 17,000 feet to the Mount Everest Base Camp.
The ‘wax-athon’ was part of the Ely to Everest fundraising campaign, which aims to raise £5,000 for Arthur Rank and £5,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Mr Gallois added: “So far we have raised £8300 of the £10k target .
“We will get as high as 18,000 ft - a peak called Kala Pathar, which we hope to summit after Everest Base Camp (altitude sickness willing).”
