THOUSANDS of people turned out to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Chatteris Christmas lights at Saturday's switch-on.

Eight of the 10 people who formed Chatteris Christmas Lights were on hand to launch the festive season and turn on what are regarded by many as the best lights in the area.

They were also presented with certificates of gratitude on behalf of the town by NE Cambs MP Steve Barclay.

Chris Savill, Chairman of Chatteris Christmas Lights, said: “If it wasn’t for these people 25 years ago we would not be switching on the lights today.”

A number of shops opened late for the switch-on, with lots of street entertainment for crowds to enjoy. The Variante Ensemble played music in Market Hill Gardens and a variety of community stalls raised money for good causes.

Santa also visited his Grotto in the Old Bakery, before joining the original committee and Mr Barclay for the big switch-on.

Mr Savill said: “The day went extremely well.”
