Motorists got caught in a flooded road in Wisbech after a temporary sign warning them it was closed was removed.
The resultant chaos saw cars trying to turn around whilst others carried on through, hopeful of safety at the end other end.
Tony Fisher, who took some of these photos, said: “The road isn’t open - someone has moved the signs. Some drivers are turning back; some are driving through it,”
One motorist whose car was damaged by the flooded road said he estimated a repair bill of £500.
“I know of 16 cars that were damaged- including my own- due to raised manhole covers,” he said.
It took three hours, he said, for recovery vehicles to arrive during which time he saw several “near misses. Eventually at 9pm highways officials arrived and coned the road off.”
One resident said his parents had told him of severe flooding in the area in the 1970s but even that “couldn’t have been as bad as this”.
A woman said she had been at the Hudson leisure centre last night and left at 8.30pm “and that stupid bit of tape made me turn right down the road where it was flooded.
“I did manage to reverse back out before I was flooded and the lovely ladies from Edina Court took the tape down so we could go the other way.
“There should have been police presence both ends and signs further up near back of doctors to warn about the road closure as people were still going fast round the corner and nearly running through the tape.”
Others questioned the robustness of the local drains to take such heavy rainfall in such a short time.
One man said today that 17 hours after the storm “the drains are still blocked and not free flowing”.
Local weather forecasters spoke of the volume of rain in Wisbech – in Wisbech one man said his son’s station had recorded 58.5mm (2.25in) of rain in the last 24 hours.
In Leverington another said he had recorded 73.8 (2.9inc) in the 24 hours to 7.30am today.
Meanwhile Wisbech Town cancelled their first home match of the season. The pitch is waterlogged.
