A scouting stalwart and kickboxing champion were named as a town’s citizen and young citizen of the year.

Norman Flatt, of 1st Whittlesey Scouts, was named as Whittlesey Citizen of the Year, while Young Citizen of The Year went to 12 year-old Sir Harry Smith College student Eddy Paddock, who has achieved international success in kickboxing.

They were presented with a trophy and certificate by Mayor of Whittlesey Councillor Dave Mason.

Last year, Eddy won a silver and bronze at the WKC World Championships and two golds at the Irish Open, which is the largest martial arts event in the world.

Peterborough BCKA instructor Andy Whitwell said: “He’s one of those lads who is a pleasure to train. It doesn’t matter what is asked of him he’ll always give 100 per cent and he is passing on his knowledge to our younger fighters.

“He will definitely be an instructor in the future.”

Mr Flatt, 56, has been involved in the scouts for a remarkable 49 years since he joined as a cub.

The father of two has been a group leader for the past 37 years and has no intention of packing it in any time soon.

He said: “I was obviously ever so pleased and honoured to receive the award.

“Being involved with the scouts is very enjoyable and really satisfying. We have plenty of young leaders coming through but I will keep it up for as long as I can.”

Assistant scout leader Chris Wood paid tribute to scout leader Mr Flatt, who he has known for 20 years.

He said: “I think it is well deserved. He has given a lot to the community over the years, not only in scouting but as a football referee.

“He is a genuinely nice guy who will do whatever he can to help someone.”
