A speed limit campaign has begun for a remote single lane country track in the middle of the Fens where a home owner says drivers speed like “lunatics”.

Irene Brown wants a 30mph speed limit to be set for Euximoor Drove - the same that is in place at nearby Christchurch - and says that the national speed limit of 60mph on a tiny lane leading to nowhere is dangerous.

Mrs Brown, who moved to the Fens nearly three years ago after living in Spain for 20 years, said: “This is such a beautiful part of the world, we bought the house because it appeared so peaceful, It seemed a quiet road, but it didn’t turn out like that.

“One Mum is terrified to let her children play out the front because the road can be quiet for a long time then from nowhere comes speeding cars, it is too dangerous, too small a road with potholes to have a 60mph limit.”

Euximoor Drove is a single track lane leading from the Sixteen Foot where it winds its way down to a dead end near the river.

Vehicles use it to get to around 25 homes along the lane and to a handful of businesses.

Farm traffic also use the road.

Mrs Brown, who wrote to Cambridgeshire County Council urging them to look at the speed limit and to repair pot holes, said: “At Christchurch they have a 30mph limit on a single track so I don’t understand why we can’t have that too.”

A Cambridgehsire County Council spokesman said temporary pot hole repairs had been made pending permanent repairs and a no-through sign had been erected following Mrs Brown’s requests.

Changing from 60mph to 30mph would cost in the region of £2,500 which was not accounted for in county budgets, he said.

He invited the local parish council to bid for local highways improvements to carry out the speed limit amendment work or it could also be done if private funding was made available.
