WHITTLESEY Allotments and Garden Society hope to continue educating children about the importance of home-grown products after holding a successful show on Saturday.

Organisers Jacquie and Martin Baldrey were delighted with the turnout as gardening enthusiasts showed off their best vegetables, chutneys, pickles and flowers at the Scout Hut in Inhams Road.

Mrs Baldrey said: “The idea to hold the event was a little seed which has grown. “We nurtured and watered it and it flourished from there into a big blooming success.

“We just wanted to bring a little something back to the town and it’s important we continue to show the younger generation where our fruit, vegetables and flowers come from. They don’t just turn up in the supermarkets.

“We love to encourage people to grow their own produce. It’s a fun, healthy and cheaper way of keeping in good shape than joining a gym. We all help each other at the allotments and many of us have become friends.”

The Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor Derek Stebbing, joined councillor Gary Swann, town clerk, Sue Evans and Jan Redhead from Westfield Nurseries in judging the entries.

“We’d like to thank everyone for giving up their free time to help the event,” said Mrs Baldrey.

“A special thanks must go to Westfield Nurseries because without them the day wouldn’t have been possible.”

The 122.30 that was raised on the day will go towards the group’s allotment fund.
