THE independent Audit Commission has given Fenland District Council a glowing report, calling it "one of the best performing councils in the country".
This comes just weeks after the Municipal Journal put the council among the nation's top 12 best achieving authorities.
The praise came this week in the annual report on the across-the-board performance of the council, delivered in person by a senior member of the commission to the council's corporate governance committee and cabinet.
The report drew on the findings and conclusions from the audit of the council and from the range of inspections that had taken place over the last year. The council has already been parised fulsomely for its financial management and for the rapid and ongoing improvements outlined in its 'Direction of Travel' report.
The Audit Commission spokesman stated that the council had outgrown its present CPA category of 'fair'. The council is now in line to be among the 'good' or 'excellent' councils.
Chief executive Tim Pilsbury said: "This report, following from all the other acclaims we have received, is very welcome, especially as it comes from the independent Audit Commission who are very hard to please. It validates previous evidence that we are making real improvements year-on-year. We are not about to rest on our laurels. This organisation is full of people who are ambitious for Fenland and its communities.
"In the coming months and years we will be looking to build on our successes. We are totally focussed on delivering excellent services and we only have achieved so much because we have such dedicated and motivated staff, many of whom carry out thankless tasks day in, day out.
