An eccentric vision of Grunty Fen has been part of the mental landscape of many hundreds of thousands of people all over the world for the past 30 years.
Hitherto they have relied on radio and recordings but BBC broadcaster Christopher South has now written the definitive guide book.
The Authorised Guide to Grunty Fen has been written by Mr South and illustrated by John Holder.
Dennis of Grunty Fen was the creation of the singer-songwriter Pete Sayers who appeared with Mr South in weekly visits to Grunty Fen on Radio Cambridgeshire for almost 20 years.
It is those weekly sorties into Grunty Fen that provide much of the backdrop and detail in the book.
Mr South said: “Every aspect of Fen life from Potts’ Thick to brawn horns, from the Great Stink Pipe to competitive drain-rodding and the Imperial Rhubarb Mills are included.
“Currency, health, shopping and religion are copiously covered and there are vital warnings on how to deal with feral nuns, the dreaded green flux and a range of poisonous plants.”
Readers will discover all they need to know about Grunty Fen’s history and ever-changing geography, learn the unusual secrets of its architecture, people and customs and find out where and when to get the best out of a mandarin jelly.
