A WISBECH shopping centre has won a national environmental award for reducing the amount of energy used to light its car park.

The Horsefair Shopping Centre won a Silver Award at the National Green Apple Awards for dramatically reducing its electricity consumption.

Manager Kevin Smith collected the award at a ceremony held at the House of Commons.

He said: “I am so pleased to have won a Silver Award for the changes to the lighting in the centre’s car park.

“I worked closely with a Wisbech-based company, Advanced Electrical Ltd, which made the changes to the lighting and the results really do speak for themselves.

“This award is a great boost and I will continue to look at other ways in which the centre can help reduce its carbon footprint in the future.”

The Horsefair’s annual electricity consumption for 2010/11 was 106,550 units but, following the installation of the new lighting system, that consumption fell to 86,922 units in 2011/12.

Stephen Wing, managing director of Advanced Electrical Ltd, said: “Everyone at the company is very proud to have received the award in conjunction with the Horsefair Shopping Centre.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the centre and other local businesses on energy-efficient projects in the future.”
