Has mild Christmas confused Fenland’s wildlife? Peacock Butterfly spotted at WWT Welney

CHRISTMAS morning was almost 20C warmer compared to last year - and it seems the unusually mild temperatures also confused the wildlife.

This Peacock Butterfly was pictured by keen photographer Albert Horton, of March, at the Widlfowl and Wetlands Trust’s reserve in Welney just a few days before Christmas.

“I was really taken aback to see this Peacock Butterfly taking advantage of the winter sunshine,” he said. “It did settle very briefly and I was able to take this photograph.

“No doubt it was confused by the sudden uplift in temperature and thought that spring had arrived but I expect the experts will say that it is another sign of climate change!”

Mr Horton, 71, of March, has just won the autumn heat of the WWT’s, national photography competition, run in association with Canon. For the full story click the Related Link at the top of this page.
