Police have described the moment they rescued a woman from an overturned car in a water filled ditch.

The dramatic rescue was witnessed by police as they patrolled the A605 near Whittlesey yesterday.

A police spokesman said: “The quick thinking officers put themselves at risk to rescue the lady, working tirelessly to prise open the door and pull her to safety”.

The spokesman said the officers were on patrol in Whittlesey when they witnessed the vehicle “roll several times on the A605 landing upside down in a water filled ditch. A lone female was trapped inside the car full of icy water”.

The spokesman said: “The lady is currently in hospital and on the road to recovery.

“If it wasn’t for these officers being in the right place at the right time it could of been a very different story. The roads are going to be icy of the next few days, please drive safely.”

On Facebook, where police told the story, it has received over 340 ‘likes’ in just 24 hours.

One woman wrote: “So glad she got out. The same happened to me in Turves just after Christmas with my baby and partner.

“The police were amazing but I hope the council take note and start gritting the roads. We hit ice and the car just lost it even though it was a sunny day mid morning; please drive carefully.”
