A brave man who pulled a casualty from a burning car has won a national award.

Littleport resident Alan Chapman was announced as Adult Hero at the national Spirit of Fire Awards on Friday after being nominated by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS).

The event honoured members of fire and rescue services and the public by recognising bravery within the fire community and dedication to The Fire Fighters Charity.

Mr Chapman met VIPs including Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, at a special Downing Street reception on Friday afternoon.

He said: “I had such a great day and even spoke to Eric Pickles myself. You go through life being inspired by amazing people with incredible stories and now suddenly, I’m up there as one of those inspirational people.

“For me, this whole experience has been so overwhelming and really quite humbling.”

Commenting on the achievements recognised at the awards, Mr Pickles said: “The Spirit of Fire Awards proudly showcase the very best of our fire and rescue service, as well as showing our admiration for those who have battled in the face of adversity, or demonstrated dedication to The Fire Fighters Charity.

“It was a true honour to meet and recognise the charity’s supporters and beneficiaries at the Spirit of Fire Downing Street reception.”

Mr Chapman’s award was collected at the evening reception by Cambridgeshire’s Chief Fire Officer Graham Stagg, who last November presented Alan with a Certificate of Commendation at the service’s own Excellence Awards.

Mr Stagg said: “It was an honour to have an outstanding person from Cambridgeshire nominated for The Spirit of Fire Awards, which are recognised nationally as a highlight in the fire service calendar.

“We have already commended Alan for his selfless act of bravery last year.”
